What is Anthracite coal? What is the application and advantages of Anthracite Coal?

08/05/2023
Vietnam is a country that have quite rich and diverse mineral resources. It has abundant coal reserve, divided into four types: Peat, Lignite coal, Bituminous coal and Anthracite coal.

In which, anthracite coal accounts for a high proportion and has great exploitation potential that can meet the requirements of domestic production and export. So, what are the characteristics and applications of anthracite coal? Let's learn it through the article below.

WHAT IS ANTHRACITE COAL?

Anthracite coal, also known as anthracite coal, is one of the hard coals with semi-metallic luster, dry, angular shape, available in nature, the highest durability in the same type of coal.

  • Density: 700-800 kg/m3 (depending on size)
  • Porosity: greater than 45%;
  • Basic chemical composition: Carbon
  • Charcoal is brittle and hard, with few impurities. They are less susceptible to change and impact by different types of chemicals.

Anthracite is a metamorphic type of coal (at low metamorphic level), with a rather high carbon content, between 92.1% and 98%, so it is resistant to chemicals and stable in the environment. acids and bases.

CHARACTERISTICS AND INDICATORS OF ANTHRACITE COAL?

Here are some indicators of anthracite coal so you can better understand the characteristics of this coal:

  • Volatile matter (V.M) of anthracite coal: 3 – 10%.
  • The calorific value: 6900 – 7300 kcal/kg.
  • Fineness: 2-5%.
  • Ash content: 10-20%.
  • Moisture: from 6 to 12%.
  • Hardgrove Index: 35 – 55.
  • Ignition temperature: 880 degrees Celsius.
  • The smoldering temperature of coal is about 450 degrees Celsius.
  • Residual pressure at explosion point: 6.3 bar.
  • Carbon content: 92.1% - 98% (depending on client demand).

APPLICATIONS OF ANTRAXIT COAL

In water treatment

  • Anthracite coal has great applications in the water treatment process. Because it has a hollow structure, it is used as a water filter material in purifiers, especially in industrial waste and water with high chemical composition.
  • Anthracite coal is widely used in household water purifiers. In the water purifier, flocs or large particles to be trapped in the first sand layer. Small, micro matter will be blocked by the bottom layer of anthracite, making the filtered water cleaner, clearer and safer for users.

In the metallurgical industry

  • Anthracite coal is used as energy in power generation, and in metallurgy.
  • It is also used in cement production.
  • Anthracite coal accounts for about 1% of global coal reserves, of which China accounts for the majority. Other producing countries are Russia, Ukraine, North Korea, South Africa, Vietnam, UK, Australia and the United States. Total anthracite production in 2020 was 615 million tons.

SOME BENEFITS OF ANTRAXIT COAL IN WATER FILTERING

  • Increase the thickness of the filter layer, helping to improve the quality of filtered water.
  • Easy to change the volume of the filter tank, helping to reduce the construction area and reduce the initial investment cost.
  • Prevention of clogging caused by the formation of bacteria such as Synedra algae, Microcytin ...
  • Due to its large sediment capacity, it is suitable for treating water with high turbidity and can increase the filtration cycle.
  • Can be used with sand and filter stones in existing filter tanks without changing the tank structure.
  • Chemically resistant because of its very high carbon content, few impurities and high resistance to acids and bases in water filtration process.
